Team trying to get momentum back

Collegian Staff Writer

Fancy shots and smooth moves might give you a top-10 highlight, but when the game is over, it's the numbers on the paper and a mark in the win column that count.

The No. 14 Penn State women's lacrosse team (3-2) will look to stick with the basic moves this weekend when it plays No. 4 Princeton at 3 p.m. tomorrow in Holuba Hall.

The Nittany Lions began the season with three easy wins but have found themselves in a rut after losing two tight games to No. 5 Virginia and No. 11 William & Mary. The ability to beat a team ranked higher than them is on top of the to-do list for the Lions. This game will be a game of revenge for the Tigers, as nearly a year ago to the day, Penn State upset Princeton 14-13 in triple overtime.

"Winning this game would be big for us especially since we lost to William & Mary. Last year, we had nothing to lose and again this year we have nothing to lose. Princeton is just a chance to prove ourselves," junior Lindsay Dutch said.

A return to basics has meant a stress of fundamentals on both offense and defense. Penn State women's lacrosse coach Suzanne Isidor said the team has focused on possession and movement of the ball near the goal and one-on-one's on defense.

"We are really focusing on execution and every person needs to step up and do their part," Isidor said. "We need to execute and stick to what we are good at. We can't just rely on one person. We need to use all our weapons."

These weapons include sophomore Jessi Lieb and freshman Kerry Shea, who both scored four goals in Sunday's game against William & Mary. Despite scoring 12 goals in the game, the Lions only took 22 shots, and goals won't come if shots aren't taken.

Tomorrow's game will also be a chance for old teammates to catch up.

Isidor and assistant coaches Tara Hohensholt and Joanne Connelly were all former teammates of Tigers assistant coach Michele DeJulius. Hohensholt was an assistant coach at Princeton in 1998, the same year DeJulius was an assistant at Penn State.

"It's great. It's hard to see her in orange and black, but she's a great friend to all of us and it will be fun," Isidor said.

The starting goalie position for tomorrow's game is still up for grabs after junior Cammie Jurkowsky gave up 14 goals and only made seven saves against the Tribe. Sophomore Jess Boccio has not started a game all season but has seen some time in goal against Colgate and Bucknell.

The Lions, however, are ready to prove themselves on the field and start a new win streak.

"We are definitely hungry. We've dug ourselves a little hole and we are now working to get out of it," Isidor said.
