Letter to the Editor
Some Muslims intolerant of many Western religions

In response to Steve Johnson's letter ("Muslims owe more respect to Western people, religions," March 15), I'm elated that someone finally had the courage to come out and speak about an issue that is often deemed politically incorrect today. I am in agreement with Johnson that an unacceptably high number of Muslims are extremely intolerant of Western culture. Of course this intolerance doesn't usually translate to a desire to kill Westerners or engage in acts of terrorism, however it is rather unsettling when one realizes how deep the hatred for all things Western runs in many parts of the Middle East.

When non-Muslim Westerners express such views, they are rightfully construed as being biased or prejudiced. But I find it disturbing that the intolerance some Muslims express toward Christians, Jews and other non-Muslims is often overlooked, especially by other Muslims.

Sorry to say, but this double standard just reeks of hypocrisy. Both Muslims and members of other religious groups should be allowed to practice as they please, but only if such practicing doesn't involve ostracizing another group, which happens to differ in its beliefs.
