A Penn State student died and another is in serious condition after their car crossed the median of U.S. Route 322 and was hit by a tractor-trailer and a UPS truck Friday morning.

Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Eric Guido said 22-year-old Allison Caimi, of Ridgway, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Stephanie Lent, of Fairlawn, N.J., was taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville with a broken clavicle and tibia and internal bruising. Lent is listed in serious condition.

The accident occurred at the Milroy exit in Mifflin County. The two were traveling to Lewistown to student teach, Guido said.

Lent, 22, was driving a 2003 Toyota Highlander eastbound on Route 322 at about 7:30 a.m. when witnesses said she started to swerve into the grass median separating the highway. Lent regained control for a moment and then crossed the median again, but this time into westbound traffic.

Lent's car hit the tire of a tractor-trailer on the passenger side. The trailer had an oversized load and was driven by John Couch, 25, of Huntingdon. The impact sent Lent's car into a spin, causing it to travel into the westbound passing lane and onto the grass median.

A UPS truck driven by Fred Grenninger, 44, of Huntingdon, was traveling in the left-hand lane and struck the car on the driver's side as it crossed onto the median.

The cause of the accident is still unknown. Lent does not remember the crash, Guido said.

Guido said he does not believe the accident was alcohol related. Lent told troopers she thought both Caimi and she were wearing seatbelts; however, according to the police report, Lent was not wearing her seatbelt.

Police said they do not know if Lent was speeding when she lost control. The speed limit on that area of Route 322 is 55 miles per hour, Guido said.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes of Route 322 were closed for ten hours Friday while state police removed debris and reconstructed the accident. The results of the reconstruction will not be available for some time, Guido said.

“The goal right now is to find out why she lost control,” he said.
