Cartoon rioters perpetuate negative Muslim stereotypes
As I read The Daily Collegian, I couldn't believe a Penn State student would try to justify the violence of Muslim extremists over political cartoons ("Western media perpetuates negative Muslim stereotypes," March 14). Anyone who participates in riots that result in the destruction of property and deaths over something as insignificant as a political cartoon is by definition a radical. This is not to say that Muslims do not have a right to be upset over a negative portrayal of their religious figure. As a Catholic, I can understand how they feel whenever I see shows like South Park or Family Guy continually mocking Christianity. However, these insults should be handled in a reasonable manner, such as boycotting those who distribute the material or taking part in peaceful protests. Violence is neither warranted nor acceptable in such a situation. It is the abhorrent behavior of the rioters that perpetuates negative Muslim stereotypes. Tim Ariosto
