Statements critical of Thon detract from event's mission
As I read The Daily Collegian, I am truly appalled by all this bad-mouthing about the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon ("Modifications would improve Thon's image," Feb. 27). Thon was started in 1973 by the Interfratnerity Council to "rebuild its image." But somehow, some way these "stupid, moronic, immature" greeks found that this event was more than just rebuilding an image -- it was about fighting for a truly good cause. Thon has not lasted for over 30 years because we feel good about ourselves; it has lasted for over 30 years because we are making a difference. A limited number of people (greeks and non-greeks) are involved in Thon for the wrong reasons. But as a greek, I can assure you that even after graduating we still continue to donate and we still continue to care for Thon the same way we did when we were at Penn State. So can we please stop all this bickering and just be thankful the Penn State community can come together and put aside all of our petty differences and actually do some good in this fight against cancer. Because in the end, that little child who has cancer couldn't care less if you are in a fraternity, sorority or a sports team; all they seem to care about is running around playing with anyone and everyone and forgetting for a weekend that they are sick.
