For someone whose major is crime, law and justice, it is ironic that Alexander Alioto is unaware that seaport security is the responsibility of the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies and is unrelated to the ownership of a management company ("Opposition to sale of ports based on safety, not racism," Feb. 27).
If Dubai Ports World replaces the existing port management company, the personnel will be the same, and the company it is replacing is foreign-owned. Incidentally, the U.S. has many Arab citizens, and some of the terrorist bombers in Europe were born and raised there, so does it make sense to forbid American or European Union firms from performing port management? Dubai Ports World has a strong financial and managerial record in its industry; conversely it is the Department of Homeland Security that scares the hell out of me. It is the best oxymoron since "military intelligence."
