Penn State falls to Bethune-Cookman, finishing under .500 on road trip

Collegian Staff Writer

Going into last week's stretch of eight games in eight days in Clearwater, Fla., Penn State baseball coach Robbie Wine said he expected his team to come away all wins and no losses.

"We should go down there and beat all these teams," the second-year head coach said.

The results did not reflect the expectation as the Nittany Lions went 3-5 on the road trip, dropping their overall record to 3-11.

The Lions earned their first win of the season in the second game of the week, defeating Sacred Heart, 17-2, after losing to Bowling Green by one run to open the week of games, which were held at Jack Russell Field, former spring training home of the Philadelphia Phillies.

After losing 2-1 to in the final at-bat to Bethune-Cookman in the last game of the trip on Saturday, the Lions have now lost four games on their opponents' final at-bat and six games by just one run.

The Lions began the trip losing 5-4 to Bowling Green after leading 4-1 going into the bottom of the ninth inning. The Falcons scored four runs with two outs to defeat Penn State, which out hit Bowling Green, 12-9.

Penn State out hit its opponents in three of its five losses. In addition to the loss to the Falcons, the Lions suffered defeats while out-hitting Central Michigan and Jacksonville.

Against the Chippewas, Penn State left nine runners in scoring position, unable to capitalize on strong pitching performances from starter Craig Clark and Lion relievers.

The Lions went down early against Jacksonville after Penn State starter David Bumstead (0-2) gave up a three-run home run in the second inning and were unable to recover.

Sandwiched between those losses was the Lions' second win of the season, a 4-0 victory against Lehigh at Bright House Networks Field, the new spring training home for the Phillies. Junior Aaron Markowitz pitched a complete game shutout, striking out nine while walking no batters.

The Lions made up for a day off on Thursday, with an 11-inning, nearly three-and-a-half hour game against Bethune-Cookman. Penn State won 6-5, when junior Matt Cavagnaro singled home freshman outfielder Garrett Field near midnight.

Penn State was on the opposite end of a 6-5 score in losing to Toledo the next day in the first game of a doubleheader. The Lions were up 4-2 in the fourth inning but the Rockets took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth during an error-plagued defensive inning.

The lead was cut to one on an error by Toledo in the seventh, but the Lions were unable to get runners in scoring position, getting one-hit by Toledo reliever Steve Wenning over the course of the final two innings. Lions starter Mark Wyner (1-3) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and five runs.

Notes

Sophomore catcher James Spinelli and Field hit their first home runs in a Penn State uniform. Spinelli's came during the first game of the trip against Bowling Green. Field went yard in the Lions romp of Sacred Heart.
