USG, UPUA lack sufficient support from student body
I find it very hard to believe how far in the sand Undergraduate Student Government (USG) President Galen Foulke's head really is. In the recent USG referendum, only 12 percent of undergraduate students at University Park campus actually voted. And that means that only about 7 percent of undergraduates at main campus voted in favor of University Park Undergraduate Association replacing USG ("UPUA receives majority of votes," March 2). How can Foulke, or anyone for that matter, claim the "evidence is very clear" when such a small proportion of people even voted, let alone supported his measure. In order for a referendum to even be valid under the current USG system, 25 percent of undergraduates must vote. Foulke claims that he wants to make student representation and advocacy better at University Park. The first thing he should do is make sure his referendum is at least as good as the system he is trying to replace. Having a vote that falls more than 50 percent short of the current USG referendum threshold is clearly not a step in the right direction. I seriously hope that the university administration will consider this fact when it is reviewing the pros and cons of replacing USG with the proposed University Park Undergraduate Association.
