UPUA waits for university's response

Collegian Staff Writer

The proposed University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) continues to be discussed at the administrative level and has yet to receive a response from Penn State President Graham Spanier.

If Spanier approves UPUA it could replace Undergraduate Student Government (USG) as the recognized student representation.

UPUA supporters, including USG President Galen Foulke, met with Vice President of Student Affairs Vicky Triponey before spring break to discuss the potential of UPUA.

Last Monday, Foulke and USG Vice President Luke Adams discussed the legal matters of UPUA with university lawyer Wendell Courtney.

Adams said they discussed the same matters with each university official and to try to "prove" their points.

After discussing UPUA with Courtney, Adams said there are more details to be discussed and more organizations that will be affected by the change, including Faculty Senate.

"It's kind of more far reaching than we originally thought," Adams said. "I think it is going to take more time for [UPUA] to be implemented."

Adams said they realized that every campus constitution that mentions USG would have to be amended if UPUA were approved.

He added that matters such as that would have to be taken into consideration but shouldn't affect the process.

Adams said plans for UPUA may also be discussed at this week's Penn State Board of Trustees meeting.

USG Senate President Andy Banducci also met with Triponey to discuss the process of implementing UPUA.

"I think ultimately what we really wanted to bring home to Dr. Triponey is that there are better and more open ways to handle this, like with a student-run process," he said.

Banducci said he agrees with most students that there are problems with the current student government, but the process UPUA supporters used was not in the student body's best interest.
