Women's lacrosse opens homestand

Collegian Staff Writer

Reaching milestones, visiting old teammates and playing sisters will be just some of what motivates the No. 10 Penn State women's lacrosse team in the coming week.

The Nittany Lions (1-0) will play four games over the break, the first of which will be their home opener against Colgate at 1 p.m. tomorrow in Holuba Hall. At 4 p.m. Tuesday, they will travel to Bucknell (1-0) for a makeup of yesterday's cancelled game. The team will then return home for two games, one at 5 p.m. March 10 against No. 5 Virginia (2-1) and another at noon on March 12 against William & Mary (1-0).

Since yesterday's game was cancelled due to inclement weather conditions, Penn State women's lacrosse coach Suzanne Isidor will have her chance on Tuesday to reach two career milestones: her 50th win as a Penn State coach and her 100th overall win as a coach. However, she is not focused on her personal agenda.

"[The milestones] are not really important to me at all. I didn't even know about them until I saw it printed up," Isidor said. "It's nice to get those wins, but it's definitely more important to the season than for my record."

Tomorrow's game will be more than just another game for Lions. It will be their first-ever meeting against Colgate, and an old teammate will return to her alma mater. The Raiders' assistant coach, Jackie Sherman, was a former Lion who graduated in 2004. Isidor joined Penn State as head coach in 2001, when Sherman was a freshman.

"It will be fun. Jackie was a great player at Penn State, and she's a great friend of mine now," Isidor said. "She does a great job at Colgate, but from the first whistle to the last whistle, she will definitely be on the other side of the field."

The seniors are also excited to see Sherman again, since she was a senior when they were freshmen.

"Yeah I'm really excited, and I think it will be really fun to see her again," senior Lori Havrilla said.

Havrilla also has another thing to be excited about, as she and fellow teammate, sophomore Jessi Lieb, will play against their sisters, Megan Havrilla and Nikki Lieb, in next Friday's game against Virginia. The game will be a rematch of last year's 10-7 upset of the Cavaliers.

"I am really, really excited. Last year, I was more excited for it that any other game," Lieb said. "There is a competition between us. It's more of a fun competition, but definitely competition."

Havrilla said that she and her sister played together all through middle school, high school, on club teams and have the same type of competition as the Lieb sisters do.

"We played almost every sport together when we were younger. I think [lacrosse] is a form of bonding for us," Havrilla said.

Despite the distractions, the Lions are primed and confident after a week of practice. They had time to dissect their game against Vanderbilt and figure out where they need improvement. Isidor is hoping that the team's shooting will improve and that it will stay tough throughout the game.

"We are really looking to build on what we did at Vanderbilt. Shooting, definitely, is key, but we want to step up the intensity and be consistent," Isidor said.
