Coming off of a phenomenal meet last weekend, with career-high scores and almost record-setting performances, the Nittany Lions' spark has ignited. The Penn State women's gymnastics team will travel to compete at 1 p.m. tomorrow against New Hampshire.
With only two meets left till Big Ten competition, the Lions have started their uphill climb right on time. This season, the team hopes to be No. 1 in the conference.
Senior Michelle Ilg said the team has a pretty good chance to be No. 1, since they have scored a 196.6 and can go higher.
"Our goal is to come out on top and beat Michigan like we always wanted to," Ilg said.
Penn State women's gymnastics coach Steve Shephard said last weekend was a confidence booster for the team and he anticipates the team doing very well against New Hampshire.
"Well, our focus is on each individual athlete doing her job," Shephard said. "If they hit and do what they are capable of doing, we all walk away proud and happy."
Ilg said Shephard is proud of his team and how it finally stepped up to the challenge.
"This is a reminder that we can do it and we are that good and we should do that every time," Ilg said.
The Lions have been working hard at the gym this week to improve upon last weekend's mistakes. Ilg hopes the team will "really come on strong again, better than last time."
Early on in the season, the gymnasts had problems with execution, sticking landings and proper form, which kept them from earning high scores. Now, six meets into the season, Shephard has noted that all four events are pretty solid.
"They are not giving away little stuff -- they are sticking landings, getting all the handstands and execution," Shephard said.
The Lions will continue to build on their big performance and improve with each routine.
"We talked a lot about when they did hit, they scored really well and we're hopeful that we're going to continue that -- to do what we do in practice," Shephard said.
Ilg said that with all the confidence going into the meet, the team will most likely succeed and do better than it has all season.
"I think our team has finally come together, and we are doing what we're capable of doing as a team, and that is really something," Ilg said.
