USG referendum lacks legitimate student input

I am having trouble seeing the legitimacy of Tuesday's Web vote for the "future of student representation" at University Park ("The Referendum," Feb. 28). It only provided two options: the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) and the Undergraduate Student Government (USG).

The survey is illegitimate because it fails to take into account the fact that about 85 percent of the students think our representation on campus is doing an inadequate job.

How much confidence do you have in the people who are currently "governing" us to provide us with choices to better advocate student concerns? I think if we are going to vote, and if those who claim to represent us actually care about student representation, they should look to the students for suggestions. A simple yes or no vote has no qualitative value in figuring our how to change things to better voice students' concerns. I will not offer a specific method, but if it takes asking students to write letters and reading every single letter, then that is what must be done.

Those with a true commitment to student advocacy need to realize the process of resurrecting our student voice to the university from the current USG is not a one vote deal but a long continual process that is likely to take years.
