The 2006 spring campaign for the Penn State men's golf team may have the appearance of a rebuilding season to outside observers.
Just don't tell head coach Greg Nye that.
"I hate to refer to it as rebuilding," Nye said of his squad. "We've got some guys who have been around."
The coach has not lowered his expectations at all for this group of golfers, however young they may be.
His goal, as always, is to have a team that performs to the best of its ability at every event and ultimately qualifies for postseason play.
If the Nittany Lions are going to do well this year, it will take a solid all-around performance. The team has a lot of golfers who can contribute in tournaments, but consistency will be the key.
Penn State has four seniors-- David Dankmyer, Greg Pieczynski, Marco Poccia and Andrew Price--who want to close out their college careers on a high note.
These four will need quality play from everyone else to be able to do so. Freshman Chad Bricker is one of those guys who will be called upon to step up.
"For me, [the goal] is just to play in all the tournaments," Bricker said. "For the team, it's definitely to do better than in the fall."
Bricker proved to be an asset during the fall season, when he cracked Penn State's top five on three occasions.
"In the fall it was a lot of pressure to do well, especially in the first couple of tournaments," Bricker said.
At the Georgetown Invitational, which was the last tournament of the fall season, he finished third overall with a 3-under par performance. He hopes that type of play will carry over into the spring now that he's gotten rid of some of the nervousness of going up against Division I competition.
Another underclassman who will be crucial to Penn State's success this year is sophomore Robert Rohanna. According to Nye, he has been playing the best of all his teammates and will need to maintain that to help the Nittany Lions do well.
If all of these factors come together, Penn State should be able to compete in every event they enter. They will have their first chance to get back on the golf course this Saturday when they travel to Orlando, Fla., for the Orange City Xavier Invitational.
Nye is looking forward to see how his team progresses this year, especially some of the young guys.
"We always look to get the very best out of every tournament that we play, but it's not always about championships," he said.
