Renaming Thon encourages more non-greek participants
I would like to applaud Ben Praster for his column ("Modifications would improve Thon's image," Feb. 27). Finally someone had the courage to voice an opinion that many Penn State students have toward the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (Thon). Don't fool yourself; there are plenty of people on campus who downright loathe Thon. The event isn't about caring for children with cancer; it's about letting everyone know you care, which are two totally different things. Thon is an opportunity for people to wear T-shirts and bracelets emblazoned with "FTK," and advertise how much better they are than everyone else who doesn't participate. The purpose of Thon is admirable, but its execution is flawed. The greek community takes the credit for everything positive relating to Thon, despite the fact that there are many other student organizations that raise money that should get equal billing. Here's a solution: Change the name from the "Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon" to "The Penn State Student Dance Marathon?" It would be a start to bringing people into Thon who are jaded because of it. Dennis Jordan
