Portland protesters speak on behalf of LGBT athletes
There has been a lot of discussion about Sunday's protest at the women's basketball game ("Protest against Portland hits last home game," Feb. 27). As a member of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, I think it is important we recognize the whole reason for the protest was to show support for LGBT athletes and create a positive atmosphere where none had previously existed. How else can you support Penn State than by speaking for those who are unable to do so? In response to the letter, "Protesters fail to advance support for LGBT views," Feb. 28, how can students complain of being disrupted from watching halftime shows because of fellow students supporting one of Penn State's minority communities? How ignorant have we become that the cries of our under-represented peers are ignored by people who would rather watch cheerleaders? The LGBT community is shouldering a lot of frustration beyond the Portland issue -- there are struggles bigger than a basketball coach, and maybe we should be focusing more on why protesting is happening before we rebuke our peers.
