Last night was the premiere episode of the long-awaited 17th season of The Real World: Key West and the introduction of Penn State alumnus John Devenanzio to the MTV audience.
Forty of John's closest friends gathered in his old apartment from last year to celebrate their friend's television debut.
"We've anticipated [the show] for about seven months," Ryan Barth
(senior-civil engineering) said. "Seeing the reactions of our friends to the show is awesome."
Before the seven strangers could even meet and fight for rooms in their new house, they had to wait out Hurricane Katrina for four days in hotels all across Miami. Once the storm lifted, John was able to meet his first two roommates, Zach and Janelle, and make small chat with them on his way to the house.
All while watching their friend on TV, John's friends instantly picked up on all of his personality traits that came through on the show. Recognizing how often John said the words "dude" and "man," one of his friends instantly started a drinking game in honor of his friend's favorite phrases.
"It's an authentic portrayal of him," Jason Casas (senior-finance) said. "I thought he'd be reserved, but he wasn't at all."
What got John's friends going crazy was what one of his roommates said upon meeting him. Tyler said that within two minutes of meeting John, he expected him to chug a beer and crash.
"He is definitely not a frat guy," Adam Bruhnke (senior-finance) said.
Bruhnke, who was John's old roommate, even noticed the small things he did that were accurate portrayals of their friend.
"The cigarette in his hat was extremely him," Bruhnke said.
What sent John's friends into a fit of laughter was when he filled the dishwasher with dish soap instead of dishwashing detergent, filling the kitchen with bubbles.
"He did that at our apartment," Bruhnke said. "John, you know better!"
Bruhnke and John's old roommates said they felt that was a silent shout out to them. Another shout out was the PSU hat and sweats John was wearing during the episode.
However, last night was not all fun and bubbles -- John sparked the first "cry fest" in the house after commenting on a roommate's too-thin frame.
Throughout the episode, the roommates took turns in interviews discussing each other. All six roommates labeled John cocky, self-confident and a meathead. His friends disagreed and said John was completely real.
"It's totally John," Barth said. "It's John to a tee."
