Mo Rocca will share his advice on dating
The former 'Daily Show' anchor will inform students tonight with his opinions about 'gamekillers' and the college dating scene.

Collegian Staff Writer

Dating on the college scene can be difficult, and former Daily Show correspondent Mo Rocca is trying to make it easier for students by warning them about a specific group of people who ruin relationships -- the gamekillers.

The Pace Car, Kash Munni and British Accent Guy are all types of the dreaded group that Rocca, who also appears on the VH1 show I Love the '80s, will be lecturing Penn State students about tonight in HUB Alumni Hall.

"Gamekillers have been around since the beginning of time," Rocca said. "The college mating game has been greatly imperiled. These forces, these gamekillers, are making innocent young men go home alone, innocent young men just trying to hook up with girls."

Rocca is coming to State College during a tour of 10 universities. Rocca said his goal in the series is to inform students, both men and women, about how to spot and identify the gamekillers so that guys can keep their cool when they come in contact with them.

"It's like a neighborhood watch program," he said. "There are 14 different types, three women and 11 men, and they're hell-bent on destroying people's dates. The key to eradicating them is information, and that will make the world a little safer."

Once a person knows about gamekillers, the lesson will stick with them for life, Rocca said.

"This is really a life lesson," Rocca said. "People need to learn how to spot a gamekiller now. Then, 50 years down the road, when they're trying to get their game on in some geriatric facility and someone comes along with a flashier walker trying to kill their game, they will know what to do and keep their cool."

Jessica DeAngelo (senior-advertising) said she's excited to hear Rocca talk about dating because college dating can be very frustrating.

"Dating in college is definitely a strange experience, and we've all encountered crazy people at one time or another," DeAngelo said. "I think it will be cool to hear somebody say the things we've always wanted to say but haven't had the time to put into words."

The lecture will be very interactive, Rocca said. He will bring three students to the stage to quiz them on the lecture. He also plans to interview a Penn State sociology professor.

Rocca said he has never fallen victim to a gamekiller but would be a hybrid of types himself.

"I've never had my game killed, pretty much because I never shut up, so it's difficult for someone to ruin my game," he said. "I would be a mix, though, of I.Q. guy, the egghead who knows all the Scrabble keywords, and the Early Man, who is the brute."

Although the lecture is geared toward men, Rocca said, he is insistent that women should be aware of the problem as well.

"Not only are there three types of women gamekillers -- for example, the Mother Hen, 'we go out as a group and we leave as a group' -- but women should also understand male gamekillers' agendas and resist tactics such as flattery," he said.

Rocca said the worst gamekillers to watch for are those who are the least publicized.

"Everyone knows about the Baller -- you know, the basketball star with all the flash -- and the Early Man, but the ones people need to be aware of are ones such as the I.Q. Man and Sensitivo," he said. "They're the ones who are friends of the girl but really want to be friends with benefits. They're the types that go to ice-dancing concerts and do yoga twice a week with them. They are the most hated."

Tonight's lecture is presented by the Distinguished Speaker Series(DSS) and is funded by AXE body spray, said Leah Weiser (senior-international politics), chairwoman of the DSS committee.

The doors for the lecture open at 6:30 p.m., and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Judy Albin, senior associate director of unions and student activities, said she expects Alumni Hall to be full since Rocca is well known in the college-aged generation.

"We have chairs set up for 800 people, and then after that, there will be standing room as well," she said. "I think we're going to have quite a lot of people there, because he's someone students have seen on TV. Plus, it will be fun and something different to experience."
