Roustabout! meshes indie pop, light rock

Collegian Staff Writer

Two out-of-towner acts will crash Roustabout! this week.

The Eames Era, of Baton Rouge, La., and The Hailing, of Washington, D.C., will play at 10 tonight at The Darkhorse Tavern, 128 E. College Ave.

The Eames Era bassist Brian Waits described the band's music as "girl-fronted indie pop."

Waits also said the band is excited about returning to State College after its performance this summer at The Darkhorse Tavern. Tonight's show is part of The Eames Era's U.S. tour to support its second album, Double Dutch.

Roustabout! featuring The Eames Era and The Hailing
When: 10 tonight
Where: The Darkhorse Tavern, 128 E. College Ave.
Details: Tickets for the 21-and-over show are $3 at the door.

The tour is going well, Waits said, and all of the members are excited to return to the road after a car accident that occurred last year, which had canceled the Northeast and Midwest legs of the tour. Energy is high within the band, and the audience tonight should be able to see that, Waits said.

"It's going to be a fun performance," he said. "A lot of dancing and maybe even some drunken revelry from the audience. The crowd can expect a fun time."

The band formed while high school friends Grant Widmer and Ted Joyner attended Louisiana State University. During their junior year, the two musicians began jamming with drummer Greg Gauthreaux and Waits. After being introduced through a mutual friend to Ashlin Phillips, they formed the band.

Playing together with The Eames Era tonight will be the Washington, D.C.-based band The Hailing.

The Hailing began playing together in February 2005, and guitarist Nick Anderson said the group has been working on its first record, which is due out late this spring.

Bass player Alex Nixon said that he is very excited to be playing at Roustabout! and that the band became involved with Roustabout! because of guitarist Davey Bell's (David Hodgson) past connection with the event's organizer, Jeff Van Fossan.

Nixon said the audience could expect about seven songs "of well-crafted, light rock."

After the performance, Bell said he's hoping to leave the audience in a good mood.

He said he wants audience members to think, "I want
to take David out for ice cream."

While The Hailing and The Eames Era don't know each other and aren't touring together, Van Fossan said the performance should be a good one.

"They're really nice kids," he said.
