Protesters fail to advance support for LGBT views

At Sunday's Penn State women's basketball game against Ohio State, I along with countless families, supporters and fans were extremely offended by the actions of some individuals staging a gay protest or rally ("Protest against Portland hits last home game," Feb. 27).

During halftime, a group of about two dozen people unfurled a large rainbow banner and proceeded to chant "We are, Penn State. We are, not straight!" I assume this was related to the controversy surrounding women's basketball Coach Rene Portland. Under normal circumstances, I would have had no problems with a rally of this kind, but their protesting did nothing but disrupt the halftime entertainment by the dance team, cheerleaders, band and guest performers. It also overshadowed the players' families who were being recognized, which is standard at most season-ending games. This was an extremely disrespectful of the individuals and if anything hurt any advancement the gay community has made.
