A number of letters and articles in The Daily Collegian have been written about the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) and the Undergraduate Student Government (USG); I am a member of neither group and have no aspirations to become one. I have read through both the current USG Constitution and the suggested UPUA Constitution, and I can say that while change is necessary, adopting UPUA as the preeminent body to represent the students would be a grave mistake.
Under the suggested UPUA constitution, the faculty and administration have final say over any suggested amendments to the constitution. How is an organization supposed to represent the will of the students if we do not even have the power to decide how we are represented? Furthermore, UPUA has no process for student referenda, so UPUA supporters had better be certain it is really what they want because it will be the last time they are given a say.
Apparently USG President Galen Foulke and his compatriots believe that your student voice would be better heard if you had less of a say in how it was heard. Fixing the problems with USG is a good idea but UPUA is definitely not the solution. This is why you should vote "no" to UPUA today or it might be the last vote you have.
