Women's tennis sweeps weekend

Collegian Staff Writer

Promising and encouraging are the two words junior Sasha Abraham used to describe this weekend's tennis matches, as she led the Penn State women's tennis team to two wins. The Nittany Lions dominated George Washington Saturday, winning 7-0, but had a close call with Princeton yesterday, pulling away with a 4-3 victory.

"In general, we got the job done," Penn State women's tennis coach Buffy Baker said. "I would say that in some of the matches, we played a little bit down -- we didn't raise our level to what I would have liked, but we did what we needed to do and got the job done."

Baker commented on Abraham's individual performance this weekend, saying she did a great job maintaining the level of her fight.

"She's very passionate, she loves the sport and enjoys competing -- win or lose," Baker said. "She has fun, and it's fun to watch her figure things out. She's a problem-solver and because of that, she's bringing her best tennis to the table thus far."

Sophomore Jenny Shular is making progress as she continues to rebuild the strength she lost due to mononucleosis. She won fairly easily this weekend and is getting stronger with every match. Shular lost a lot of weight, putting her about four pounds out of where she needs to be in terms of conditioning.

Junior Katelyn BeVard said the team did a good job of competing as a whole and is going in the right direction, but there is always room for improvement.

"Winning doubles was important because it's something we haven't been winning and it gave us momentum going into the singles match," BeVard said.

She also felt confident about her personal performance and was excited about getting through a match without tiebreakers.

Abraham felt the team had a solid performance and a good finish for their last home match before spring break.

"Our first Big Ten match is next Sunday so it is good to have a solid weekend before that," Abraham said. "We want to accomplish certain things -- we want to be as high as we can be in the Big Ten. The higher the better."
