PSU, alcohol not to blame for many student accidents
In response to the death of Michael Donahue, there is only one person to blame: the person who has been detained by the police and being tried in a court of law ("Man faces first-degree murder charge," Feb. 22). Alcohol is not to blame, the university is not to blame and Penn State President Graham Spanier is certainly not to blame. Considering the suspect was not even a Penn State student proves that his actions are not the result of any university actions. Furthermore, I think the university's responsibility to Donahue's family is minimal, and thus far has been appropriate. I enjoy the Phyrst Phamily and love that the president of my university takes the time to be with his students on Saturday nights. I have been at the Phyrst on many Saturday nights and as anybody familiar with State College nightlife knows, there is absolutely no need to bring a knife to a bar. In response to The Daily Collegian's editorial, "University Response: Official response trivializes student death," Feb. 24, parents do not expect the university to take care of their children. It is the responsibility of each student to conduct himself or herself appropriately. We must all take responsibility for our actions and stop placing blame on alcohol, Penn State and State College.
