Letter to the Editor
Thon a publicity event for many greek groups

It's think it's unfortunate that Beau Grove sent a letter solely to praise himself and other fraternity members ("Thon provides students chance to help others," Feb. 22). Sadly, this is one more example of how a lot of people (particularly members of fraternities and sororities) use the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (Thon) as an event for self-praise and glorification.

I visited Rec Hall last weekend, and what I mostly saw were greek slogans, corporate sponsors and fraternity members showing the cameras how "wonderful" they are. Sadly, Thon has become a publicity stunt to raise the image of the greek community rather than an event to celebrate the children who fight cancer.

Perhaps we will all magically forget about the drunken and deplorable behavior of the greeks throughout the rest of the year because of Thon. Then again, maybe not.

It will take more than a "good deed for the day" to raise the image of the Penn State greek community. Grove would have better spent his time writing a letter praising the bravery of the kids who fight every day against their cancer, rather than using the letter to shamelessly glorify himself.
