Springer Wahl's letter attacks Penn State Spokesman Bill Mahon for not thinking logically ("Blaming deaths on alcohol illogical of PSU spokesman," Feb. 23). Yet the letter itself was perhaps the most illogical one I have read in a long time.
Wahl is right in saying that alcohol did not stab Michael Donahue. But there is a very good possibility that alcohol played a role in the incident. And the assertion that alcohol did not cause a drunk driving accident is absurd.
Ultimately, people must accept responsibility for their actions when they make a mistake; alcohol is not an excuse. But too many people in this town abuse alcohol. Everyone, myself included, has those nights when they go out of control. But for the most part, people must learn to use alcohol to supplement a good time, not create one. When that happens, the possibilities for tragedies such as drunk driving and violence increase, and the risks outweigh the benefits.
