U.S. port cartoon, editorial disrespect entire country
I am writing this in response to the cartoon and accompanying editorial, "U.S. Ports: Sale could compromise domestic security," Feb. 23. The editorial expressed views implying that the U.S. should not pursue the port deal with the United Arab Emirates-based company since two of the Sept. 11, 2001 hijackers were from there. Why not exclude Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Lebanon then as well? Yes, I do understand people's concern with the deal, but remember that United Arab Emirates has been our ally. The country does not deserve to be considered untrustworthy because they are in an "unstable part of the world." Then below the editorial, I was hit with a cartoon illustrating what could happen if an United Arab Emirates-based company operated some of our ports. The cartoon displayed a ship in the port from United Arab Emirates and implied that the Arabs at the port intentionally ignored a box containing a bomb that could kill American workers. How can The Daily Collegian print a cartoon like that when we have many United Arab Emirates students here? Phil Lillquist
