Decision to go smoke-free would help bar atmosphere

I was extremely annoyed with Andrew Hanelly's column, "Bars not ideal target for smoke-free campaign," Feb. 21. I am from New York and I fully support the smoking ban that is in place. It is nice to know that I can go out drinking at a bar and I will not return home smelling like cigarettes.

I understand that going to a bar is not a necessity. However, I am a typical college student who enjoys going out and having a few drinks with my friends. Smoking may be a personal choice, but second-hand smoke is not.

So is banning smoking in public places really the start of a slippery slope? I do not think it is, but everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion on the subject. In a perfect world, there would be an equal number of bars that allowed smoking as well as those that banned it. That way everyone would be able to choose his or her desired drinking setting. Unfortunately, we do not live in a perfect world and only time will tell if the smokers or nonsmokers will win this battle. I am going to bet on the non-smokers.
