Carlin brings comedy to PSU

Collegian Staff Writer

After having to cancel his show back in January, George Carlin will be performing at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Eisenhower Auditorium.

Health issues over the winter holiday prohibited the comedian from starting his tour and forced him to push back the start of the tour.

According to Carlin's Web site, georgecarlin.com, the comedian's health issues and shortness of breath were due to a lung infection and narrowed arteries. After a few days in the hospital and surgery, Carlin's publicist, Mary Ellen Duerr, said that the comedian is doing better.

"He is doing wonderful," Duerr said.

Carlin even sent a message to his fans on his Web site regarding his health, saying that he's up and about and working on his material for the road. He is on the road a few times a year, doing, what he calls on his Web site, the short theater-concert tours. However, Carlin performs in Las Vegas at the casinos 12 weeks a year.

Laura Sullivan, Penn State's Center for the Performing Arts spokeswoman, said that with the delay in the performance it has helped to increase ticket sales.

Carlin was originally scheduled to perform to a close-to-sell-out show at Eisenhower, and now, once again, there are not many tickets left for tomorrow's show, she said.

"Moving the performance to a Friday has helped out a lot," Sullivan said. "We've sold more tickets and Friday seems to be more convenient for everybody."

Another convenience for the staff at Eisenhower is how simple the stage will be tomorrow night.

"He'll use a microphone and stool," Lea Asbell-Swanger, assistant director of the Center for Performing Arts said. "It's very basic, most comedians normally are. They don't have to bring much we have it all."

The one thing Carlin will be bringing with him is opening act, Dennis Blair.

"Blair will be opening for Carlin, he almost always travels with him for his shows," Sullivan said.

Carlin, who became popular with his obscene acts back in the '70s, with his routine "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television," has sparked a career in movies, television and books.

While late at night on Comedy Central viewers may be able to catch one of those seven words slip out without a "bleep," it is even more inevitable that Carlin will let out those words in his comedy routine.

The four-time Grammy award-winning comic's obscene language is something that does not worry the staff at Eisenhower.

"We're very familiar with his style of comedy," Sullivan said. "He has plenty of recordings, and it's not all profanity."

Sullivan said that it's Carlin's funny musings on everyday life are what make him a perfect candidate for performing at Penn State.

"With any performer the opportunity exists for someone to be offended," Sullivan said. "There is always a risk."

That risk, however, is not an issue for Sullivan. She said that even though the risk exists, people realized that there were no problems with Carlin's first appearance at Penn State and that is why they enjoy having Carlin perform.

Lately, however, it seems that Carlin isn't taking many risks with his choice in movie roles. The one-time Mr. Conductor on the children's television show Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends has tamed down his comedy for such movie roles as Ben Affleck's dad in Jersey Girl.
