Xia death shows need for pedestrian caution

With the unfortunate death of Xiaohui Xia, a Penn State graduate student who was hit by a car, I hoped that this would be a wake-up call to all pedestrians in State College ("Student dies from injuries," Feb. 16). I was wrong.

This past weekend, I nearly struck two pedestrians in two separate incidents. One was crossing the street in front of Canyon Pizza, the area where two other pedestrians were hit within the past month. The other was at Allen Street and Beaver Avenue, when a young woman staggered across Allen Street in front of me when I had the green light.

Is it going to take the death of another pedestrian for something to be done about this? Maybe it is time the State College Police Department and the Penn State University Police stop worrying about catching people who drink underage and urinate in public.

A few jaywalking tickets given out by police might do the trick. Or will it take another unnecessary death for the public to take notice?
