Delayed verdict in Lions' favor

Collegian Staff Writer

With the scores so close at the end of the last rotation that no one knew which team won, two teams stood on the Bryce Jordan Center floor anxiously waiting the final score for 15 minutes.

The two teams stood in straight lines, not knowing either squad's fate while the scores were being finalized.

The Penn State men's gymnastics team anxiously awaited the announcer in the Jordan Center to tell everyone what the final score was -- a 216.80-216.75 Penn State victory against No. 4 Stanford.

The reason for the wait was that the judges changed a pivotal floor routine score for senior Chad Buczek that ultimately gave the Lions .2 more points.

"The suspense was tough," sophomore Derek Helsby said. "We were just standing there hoping and praying."

With the Cardinal leading the No. 8 Nittany Lions (5-0, 1-0 Big Ten) by .3 of a point going into the last event, the Lions' hopes for victory fell on the shoulders of the gymnasts in the high bar competition.

Helsby and junior Matt Cohen put up high scores for the Lions, enabling them to pull off the close victory.

"This is a routine that I've been working so hard on and put it all together," Helsby said. "I just went aggressive, all or nothing and came through."

The score of 9.35 propelled Helsby to the all-around win and propelled his team to the victory over the higher-ranked Cardinal.

Cohen competed right after Helsby and knew that he needed to follow the sophomore's example.

"Basically going into the last event, all I could think was that it was on my shoulders because I was up fifth," Cohen said. "The team needed a high score and I just tried to clear my head and do what I had to do and what I was trained to do."

With freshman phenom Casey Sandy out for the rest of the season after he broke his arm in practice on Thursday, Penn State men's gymnastics coach Randy Jepson needed everyone to come together.

Sandy had won the all-around twice this season and Jepson knew that he would be sorely missed.

"I knew we had to tighten the belt after Casey went down," Jepson said. "I told the guys we'd have to fight from here on out."

Jepson, after Buczek's floor routine, put in an inquiry with the judges over his final score of 9.15.

The coach noticed that the judge's start value for the routine was not correct and put in the inquiry, which was not acted upon until after the meet was over.

"The score came out to the right scores," Jepson said. "It was unfortunate it took to the end of the event."

But the talk of the event was not only the close score, but also Helsby and Cohen's high bar performance in the win.

Jepson was impressed with the two meet-winning performances.

"We need guys to step up like that," Jepson said. "With Matt Cohen, he hadn't had the dismount laid out yet, and I told him, 'now is the time.' "
