A Penn State student died last night from wounds he sustained after he was stabbed in the heart early Friday morning inside Club Love, 129 1/2 S. Pugh St.
Michael Donahue, 22, of Drums was pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m. in the Intensive Care Unit of Mount Nittany Medical Center, according to a State College Police Department press release.
Police said Josephy Alberto Ventura, 27, of East Prospect Avenue, used a wood-handled paring knife with a 3-inch blade to stab Donahue at about 1:30 a.m.
Last night, District Attorney Michael Madeira said he is looking to charge Ventura with murder. However, he said he won't know what degree murder charge the commonwealth will levy against Ventura until Madeira reviews new information and receives the report from the autopsy, which was scheduled for 8 p.m. yesterday.
Ventura remains in Centre County Prison in lieu of $3 million bail.
State College Police Sgt. John Gardner said police are still investigating the events that led up to the stabbing. Donahue's roommate told police Donahue was attempting to break up a fight when he was stabbed.
Police said there is no evidence to suspect that Ventura and Donahue knew each other prior to the stabbing.
Ventura was restrained by bar staff until he was taken into police custody. When he was interviewed by police at about 3:30 a.m. Friday, Ventura denied stabbing anyone.
Upon searching Ventura's jacket, police found a bloody knife. Ventura told police he used the knife earlier in the day to fix his car, and the blood was his own, according to court documents filed Friday.
When State College Police Detective Bill Wagner reviewed the surveillance tape from inside the bar, he observed Ventura "making a thrusting motion with his hand" toward Donahue's chest.
According to court documents, Ventura was upset about an incident in which his girlfriend, a student, was allegedly assaulted earlier in the night. Police did not indicate that Donahue was linked to the incident.
When Donahue arrived at the hospital Friday morning, doctors performed open-heart massage on his heart for more than an hour. He was unable to be relocated to a special care facility because of the severity of his condition, according to court documents.
Police said Ventura has lived in State College for about a year and was currently living with his girlfriend. Before that, he lived in the Bronx.
Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has related information to contact the State College Police Detective Ralph Ralston at 814-278-4742.
