In spite of a driving-on-the-sidewalk DUI incident in front of Rec Hall early Saturday morning, the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon went off without a hitch, Penn State University Police said yesterday.
At about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, a car drove onto the sidewalk outside of Rec Hall -- an event that "endangered the pedestrians on the sidewalk," according to a police report.
However, the car didn't hit anyone outside Rec Hall, an area abuzz with activity because of Thon.
The driver took off, ignoring police who tried to stop him, and drove south down Burrowes Road, where he was quickly stopped. A DUI charge and other charges are pending, University Police supervisor Clifford Lutz said.
Other minor weekend incidents at Rec Hall included two public drunkenness citations, one underage citation and a stolen $500 ski jacket, Lutz said.
When compared to past Thons, Lutz said each year, the committee "gets better and better" at putting on a secure event.
"The Thon committee does a good job of working with the university and pulling off an event of this magnitude," Lutz said.
Because Thon's venue is being upgraded to the Bryce Jordan Center next year, 2006 marks Thon's last year gracing Rec Hall.
But Lutz said the move is a positive one for safety reasons.
"We're enthusiastic about it being moved to the Jordan Center so there's more room for guests and spectators and parking," he said.
