PSU traveling down Curtain Road

Collegian Staff Writer

If you head into Rec Hall this Sunday night looking for the Penn State men's gymnastics team in competition you'll be in the wrong place.

With the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon taking over Rec Hall, the No. 6 Nittany Lions (4-0, 1-0 in Big Ten) will be invading the Bryce Jordan Center at 5 p.m. Sunday in their biggest meet of the year so far against No. 4 Stanford.

The Lions have not competed in two weeks and have not competed at home in more than a month and are excited to show off in front of the Penn State crowd.

"It's definitely an advantage being home again," senior captain Chad Buczek said.

"You have a ton of support, you're in an environment you're used to, it's definitely good to be back."

The last time the Lions competed at home, they easily defeated Temple with strong showings by freshman Casey Sandy and sophomore Santiago Lopez.

The team may be excited to be home again, but not everyone is happy about competing in the Jordan Center.

"It's definitely a different atmosphere," junior Matt Cohen said.

"You're used to competing in Rec Hall where the fans are really close and with 3,000 people, the place feels like it's packed."

Cohen also said that the Jordan Center gives you a feeling of being alone due to the larger amount of space in the arena.

Buczek agreed with Cohen's assessment of Rec Hall's "personal atmosphere" and mentioned some of the minor differences on the floor that will make competing at the Jordan Center almost feel like an away meet.

"You're not really familiar with the surroundings," Buczek said. "Gymnastics is all about spotting and awareness, and it's completely different there."

The high ceilings of the Jordan Center were said by Buczek to be a concern, an issue that Cohen completely agreed with.

"The ceiling of the Bryce Jordan Center is pitch black when you look up," Cohen said. "At Rec Hall, when you look up there are bright spotlights, so when you are doing the high bar and you look up it's completely different."

The Lions know that they are not competing against the Jordan Center but against the Cardinal and have been focusing in practice the last two weeks in order keep the undefeated season intact.

Penn State men's gymnastics coach Randy Jepson has not let his team off easy in the past two weeks.

"The last couple weeks that we have had off have been very difficult," Buczek said.

"Coach saw this as an opportunity to really get us confident in doing routines and doing repetitions to help start build stamina."

The Lions will need the extra stamina against a higher ranked Stanford team but will try to use the home-gym advantage even though it's in a different gym.

With all the practice they have been getting, the Lions feel as if they are ready for this weekend and the NCAA Championships.

"The past two weeks have been crazy hard," Cohen said. "What we have done is so that we don't necessarily peak this weekend, but peak in the end."
