Local fire death article disrespects sole victim

I don't understand why The Daily Collegian printed the article on national average of fire deaths at universities ("PSU's fire deaths less than average," Feb. 14).

If you live between a mile and two miles away from campus, congratulations, you only make up 3 percent of the total fire deaths. The Collegian even included a statement by Penn State spokesman Bill Mahon, who said there has only been one fatality in 23 years and that "there is no trend." Mahon is shamelessly placing a positive spin on this one fatality and the Collegian published it. How are these statistics relevant to Penn State students? How does the phrase "Published independently" apply to this article? Upon publication of the article, Penn State probably sent the Collegian a giant thank you card. The death of Penn State student Christopher Raspanti was last year., and a reference to 23 years ago does not matter the students who knew him.

Once again, the Collegian published an article relating to the tragedy and blatantly disregarded the feelings of Raspanti's friends and family. The Collegian's motive appears to be increasing circulation and that is appalling.
