Allies does not promote equality with 'Kiss-OUT'
Allies has once again managed to bring itself to the forefront of the news without creating any kind of positive discourse ("Gay couples fight for rights with a kiss," Feb. 15). In staging its annual Kiss-OUT, this organization has merely served to stir anti-gay sentiment rather than promote tolerance and understanding. If the aim were to achieve equity, why make a spectacle of yourselves? It seems counterproductive to me. If we are to be taken seriously in our struggle for equality, we must be seen as equal. This is not done by causing a stir but rather by living our lives as equal citizens. Creating a stir only emboldens reactionaries; whereas quietly spreading a grassroots movement by just living our lives would start a radical change toward universal acceptance. Those in Allies might call this subservience to some heteronormative ideal, but I see it for what it truly is: equality. Timothy Best
