Students use Facebook for meaningless purposes
The editorial regarding Facebook, "Facebook: Employers wise to use site as resource," Feb. 14, argues that employers are wise to use the Web site as a resource. Whether or not this violates the right to free speech and privacy, this practice is altogether a waste of the employer's time and goes against their better judgment. What exactly are these prospective employers looking to find on this Web site, which is meant to be seen by fellow, fun-loving college kids? In reference to the editorial, would it be so terrible if, God forbid, a college student were a member of a group called "Drinker by day, drunker by night?" Isn't that part of what college is all about? Working hard and playing hard? I'm sure even the honorable President George Bush would have a few good stories to tell about his days at Yale University. Will a future potential employer look at my Facebook site and decide that I just wouldn't be a good fit based on my small number of Facebook friends? Will they conclude that, based on this, I must have poor social skills? Please, employers, unless a student is a member of a group entitled, "Kids who plan to steal from and beat their future bosses," ignore the Facebook site as harmless college amusement. Sarah Lipman
