Wind power advances benefits local region

As energy costs continue to rise, I support the Eco-Action campaign to pressure Penn State to expand its use of alternative sources of energy and help it emerge as a leader in environmental and community stewardship ("Mascot chirps for Eco-Action cause," Feb. 15).

The biggest problem barring the use of alternative energies has always been the cost. On the two sides of the debate are ideologically driven environmentalists and economically driven policymakers.

In the middle are us students, who don't want to see our tuition costs raised another cent. However, recent economic and technological developments have increased the feasibility of wind power. The wind power industry is growing in Pennsylvania due to increased consumer demand and the availability of commercial-grade wind resources in the Somerset, Scranton and Hazleton areas. The industry creates short-term construction jobs and long-term operation positions.

As a massive and iconic state institution, Penn State can improve its image and take a leadership role by helping maintain local agriculture and providing jobs in the community. These ends can be met through supporting wind power and increasing their wind power purchase. For both ideological and economic reasons, I support the Eco-Action campaign for an increased wind power purchase by Penn State.
