NEWS

The word on the street isn't about war, famine or midterms. These days, students are talking about Chuck Norris.

You've heard of speed traps -- but pee traps?

Student dies from injuries

The state Senate voted 46-1 yesterday to confirm Penn State Board of Trustees Chairwoman Cynthia Baldwin to a two-year term as a justice on the state Supreme Court.

Students and postal union representatives are fighting to keep "Don the Mail Guy" at the University Park Post Office on campus. A Penn State spokesman said university administration would not intervene, saying this is a postal service matter.

Do you wish you were an Oscar Mayer wiener?

Students who are angry at the university's latest legal arguments in the discrimination case against Lady Lions basketball coach Rene Portland announced plans to march at the team's last home game Feb. 26.

Student waives choking case hearing

For those involved in the 2006 Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon -- it's crunch time.

As a liberal-turned-conservative, Mike Adams often can offer an unusual perspective on controversial topics such as feminism, liberal bias in the classroom and discrimination that he recognizes as a conservative professor at University of North Carolina-Wilmington.

Despite a national trend that shows graduate school enrollment increasing, Penn State's University Park enrollment has dropped by more than 700 students since 2003.

Two student leaders contributing to the formation of a new programming board at Penn State hosted an open forum last night to share their ideas and hear students' concerns.

The Rev. Harold McKenzie is worried about losing the building that houses his church.

The competition was fierce last night as members of the Penn State black community battled one another during a game of trivia highlighting the accomplishments of famous blacks throughout history.

Conservative black talk-show host Reginald Jones said at last night's affirmative action debate that he wasn't concerned about the fact that cabs would not pick him up in New York City.

The State College Borough Planning Commission has set a date to complete the revitalization of the Urban Village -- an area made up of more than 90 percent student housing.

SPORTS

Try to imagine five ten-thousandths of a second.

When high school football players and their families come to Penn State for an official visit, it's often the job of Guido D'Elia to escort them around campus for a weekend.

Confidence is something that is contagious. It is an aura that can be felt by anyone that is surrounded by it. Confidence is exactly what was residing inside the pitchers and catchers yesterday at the Penn State baseball practice in the Multi-Sport Facility.

For most softball coaches, it's a dream to have the top-five run producers and all of the pitchers returning after an above .500 season. For Penn State coach Robin Petrini, it's a nirvana.

Not missing an opportunity to kick a team while it was down, the Penn State men's basketball team beat struggling Indiana last night at the Bryce Jordan Center, defeating the Hoosiers 71-68.

Confusion spread last night amidst reports that Indiana coach Mike Davis resigned but would remain on board until the season's end.

If Penn State women's basketball coach Rene Portland is invited to the WNIT ball, she will not take a ride in a pumpkin chariot to dance with the prince.

With a midweek contest at home against an easily overmatched opponent, the Penn State men's tennis team could have been in for a letdown.

Kamela Gissendanner has always been fearless.

ARTS

Turn that winter frown upside down.

The '80s were a simpler time.

Terry McMillan, a prominent voice of contemporary African-American women's fiction, was recently featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show. The author of such blockbuster bestsellers as Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back wasn't chatting with the "Queen of Daytime Television" to promote a new book or movie adaptation.

The best part of going to CiCi's Pizza, 1653 N. Atherton, ain't the before, or the during. It's the after. Amply engorged on the finest pizza, pasta and salad $3.99 (at lunch) can buy, you stumble moony-eyed out into the brisk night air. But not before the good people of Cici's offer one hospitable chime of farewell: "CiCi you later," they exclaim. You bet your sweet tomato sauce you will.

Forget the plain wooden floor of the Bryce Jordan Center. This weekend, it takes on a new surface: ice.

Baritone singer Keith Phares will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday at Schwab Auditorium, but this is only one event scheduled on his tour of the State College area this weekend.

Tom Yum Koong:

"It's never too late to fall in love."

A medley of Dr. Seuss stories, and all of the well-known prose that accompanies them, is coming to the No Refund Theatre (NRT) production Seuss this week.

Penn State students will have the opportunity to view the film The Amateurs before it hits theaters this May and chat with cast member Joe Pantoliano at a pre-screening this Saturday.

With all the cookie-cutter styles available around State College a la Abercrombie & Fitch and The North Face, it can be challenging for Penn Staters to establish a unique style. Some students have a found a solution to this problem by creating their own fashion styles.

The African dance troupe Nommo is among many student organizations scheduled to perform during the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon this weekend.
