PSU student attacked in dorm room
Another student has been charged with burglary, criminal trespass and simple assault in the East Halls attack.

A Penn State student who allegedly attacked a freshman as he was sleeping in his East Halls dorm room was committed to Centre County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail Monday.

According to court documents, Kevin Maas, 20, of Blue Bell, allegedly punched the 18-year-old victim, a resident of Brumbaugh Hall, about 20 times late Thursday night.

The victim told police he knew Maas from high school, Penn State University Police Assistant Supervisor Tyrone Parham said.

Maas allegedly entered Brumbaugh Hall at about 3 a.m. with three other men, two of whom were in the room and pushed the victim during the attack.

The men entered the victim's unlocked dorm room and approached the bed, where the victim and a woman, also a Penn State freshman, were sleeping. The victim's roommate was not in the room, Parham said.

The victim told police that Maas attacked him for five to 10 minutes before fleeing the building.

Parham said that the victim could not identify the other men but that university police are looking for them in their continuing investigation of the incident.

The victim sustained injuries to his head, face and chest. Police observed that he had a severe nosebleed, one side of his face was swollen, and he had blood on his chest and arms, according to court documents. Police also saw blood on the bed sheets and refrigerator.

A university ambulance transported the victim to Mount Nittany Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries and received a CAT scan.

The woman was also injured by the assailant, receiving bruises to her arms, Parham said.

A resident assistant reported the incident to police, who learned that Maas had left town for the weekend. They issued a warrant for arrest, and Maas turned himself in Monday, Parham said.

Maas is charged with burglary and criminal trespass -- both felony charges. He also faces misdemeanor charges of simple assault, simple assault by physical menace and criminal conspiracy.

Yesterday, Centre County Prison said Maas had posted bail and was set to be released.

Parham said police are waiting to talk to Maas when he has an attorney present. He said the incident should be a sign to other students to be safe and lock their dorm rooms at night.

"Unfortunately, we can't pound it home hard enough to students to lock their doors," Parham said. "There's this false sense of security [in the dorms]."
