NEWS

In an effort to prevent the spread of illness on campus, University Health Services (UHS) has turned to the wonders of invisible glitter lotion and black lights to scope out dirty hands.

Local officials say fire-related student deaths are a rare occurrence in State College, despite a USA Today report released Jan. 24, finding that fires account for 10 percent of all deaths of four-year college students.

Playing basketball, listening to music and eating pizza with friends on a Friday or Saturday night are not typical fundraising activities.

A graduate student who is in critical condition after she was hit by a car and seriously injured Thursday is receiving support from her Penn State colleagues, friends and family.

How fast can someone eat a sandwich as big as a forearm, seriously?

A downtown sandwich shop that has been serving the community for more than 30 years is up for sale -- on eBay.

Local opponents of the USA Patriot Act want State College Borough Council to join other cities like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia in denouncing the national bill, which must pass a vote on March 11 to be extended.

Penn State is set to become one of the first stops for veterans returning home from service. More than 15,000 Pennsylvania National Guard soldiers and members of the Air Force will be honored at a ceremony at the Bryce Jordan Center next September.

Penn State recently became the final school in the Big Ten to affiliate with the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC), an organization responsible for monitoring the collegiate apparel industry.

SPORTS

Southwest of State College, in Portage, sits Len Chappell Gymnasium. Its namesake is the leading basketball scorer for the area high school, also the father of Wisconsin forward Jason Chappell.

Walking off the Bryce Jordan Center court and into the tunnel leading to the visitor's locker room, Alando Tucker and his Wisconsin teammates were whooping it up, counting their blessings for their position in a Big Ten season full of surprises.

In Big Ten women's basketball, it's not just any given Sunday, it's any given Thursday, too.

Nothing was out of place as guards Ben Luber and Mike Walker shot around before practice yesterday. Just a little game of around-the-world, a little long distance practice. But a recent lack of rebounding will have them drilling a little closer to the hoop once the practice whistle blows.

For a man that is usually hesitant to give his entire team a good report card, wrestling coach Troy Sunderland broke out of character this weekend, seeming almost, well, satisfied.

The contrast was too big to ignore, only eclipsed by the parallels between the two.

SCIHEALTH

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, when attention focused on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) response to the disaster, one Penn State researcher found that damage prevention is effective.

Chocolate is the ideal gift for Valentine's Day year after year, and with good reason, since there is more to chocolate than its sweet taste; it also has some health benefits.

Before being purchased at a floral shop, Valentine's Day roses have had a lengthy journey from another continent, which continues once in the vase.

ARTS
Roustabout! organizer Jeff Van Fossan would like to cordially invite the dateless people of State College to his rock 'n' roll shindig tonight at Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave. As he said, the logic is airtight.

Exhibits usually showcase the finished work of an artist, but the pieces in a show titled Hodgepodge: Prints, Sketches, and Drawings on display in Patterson Gallery in Patterson Building show how an artist practices his craft.

A lot of banging and clanging is going to happen tonight in Esber Recital Hall as Percussion I Ensemble and Mallet Ensemble perform, but Professor Dan Armstrong said he believes the noises will be a much-needed change for the listeners in the audience.
