Lady Lions hopes fading

Collegian Staff Writer

Coming into Bloomington, Penn State women's basketball coach Rene Portland stressed to the Lady Lions that losing to the same team twice was unacceptable.

It had happened against No. 8 Purdue on Sunday. But averaging just over a point a minute, committing numerous personal fouls and getting clobbered on the boards qualify as similar sins.

The Penn State women's basketball team (10-13, 4-8 Big Ten) was able to accomplish the whole gamut of mistakes to lose to Indiana (13-10, 7-5) for the second time this season, 58-43.

Somehow the Hoosiers were able to finish the first half up only 22-16 with nine turnovers, mainly because Penn State only converted two points off of those turnovers.

Penn State combined for 34 percent from the field, along with a 1 for 12 night from three-point range. Shooting became eerily similar to the second loss to another team in the state of Indiana.

"The same thing that happened in the Purdue game," Portland said to the Penn State Sports Network. "We hit that stall point."

When the second half started with junior Amanda Brown picking up her third personal foul, the Hoosiers began to take control.

Indiana then went on a 17-2 run, that was snapped when the Lady Lions hit the 20-point mark with 13 minutes remaining in the second half. Freshman guard Mashea Williams was able to hit a jumper to make the score 35-20.

Even with the foul trouble, and only 25 minutes on the court, Brown was able to lead the struggling Lady Lions in scoring with 11 points. Brown's foul trouble was magnified by sophomore Romana Vynuchalova's absence.

Vynuchalova was left back in State College for disciplinary reasons. The lack of depth in the front court allowed the Hoosiers to dominate the Lady Lions on the boards, pulling down 42 compared to Penn State's total of 31.

With the loss, the Lady Lions' hope of a WNIT bid is fading away. To qualify a team needs to have a .500 record or better, and Penn State would have to win out to accomplish the feat. Making matters worse, the last game of the season will be against No. 7 Ohio State.

That's a team that they have already lost to once.
