Collegian's local stories appropriate for audience
Rachel Trosino makes a good point by saying students need to be more aware of global and national events ("World news more important than strippers, USG fighting," Feb. 9). However, I've been under the impression that the role of a student paper like The Daily Collegian is not to cover issues of global and national importance but to focus on the students. After all, it is a student-run newspaper, and therefore limited in its ability to cover events like the war in Iraq or Coretta Scott King's funeral. Funds and logistics make it impossible to send a staff reporter to Iran, for instance, while the alternative of filling the front page with Associated Press reports defeats the purpose of having a student-run paper. I think its great that so many students are interested in national events, and the Collegian does provide some coverage of them. To supplement that, students who want more can take advantage of the Student Newspaper Readership Program and pick up a copy of The New York Times or USA Today. Torie Bosch
