Council projects benefit students, local residents
The Daily Collegian editorial, "Borough Safety: Meaningful council projects few, far between," Feb. 8, does not give the State College Borough Council the credit it deserves. Since my arrival here four years ago, the number of student riots has fallen to zero. State College, a community of which many of us are just transient members, has erected a parking garage and a beautiful new library and laid out many new plans to carry along development in State College that will have a positive impact on the area long after most of the Collegian's readers are gone. On the issue of lighting, I believe council is taking a reasonable amount of time in determining what areas need more streetlights. It is unreasonable to expect the local government to provide lighting on every street in the borough, and there will always be a higher rate of crime in poorly lit areas. If students want to feel safe and avoid being crime victims, then I suggest that they avoid these poorly lit areas when they are traveling alone late at night after the bars close. Students need to stop blaming council for everything that goes wrong in this town and accept some responsibility for their personal decisions that lead toward trouble. Robert Clagg
