A Penn State graduate student sustained critical injuries yesterday morning after she was hit by a car while crossing South Allen Street near Logan Avenue.
Xiaohui Xia, 25, was crossing near the 1000 block of South Allen Street about 9 a.m. when she was struck, the State College Police Department said.
The car, a 1999 red Ford Taurus, was driven by Boalsburg resident Clifford Warner, 73. He was traveling southbound on Allen Street, according to police.
It was confirmed that Xia, of Plaza Drive, was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center. She was then airlifted to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Her condition was not available at press time yesterday.
Police said the car stopped at the scene, and no charges have been filed in relation to the incident.
Police said it was uncertain whether Xia was crossing the street in an official crosswalk.
The investigation is still under way and a department accident reconstructionist will determine the speed of the car and the conditions at the time of the accident, police said.
There was some damage to the car, and the southbound lane of South Allen Street at the intersection of Logan Lane was partially closed for about an hour and a half while the reconstructionist and detectives conducted their investigation, police said.
Although this is not the first vehicle/pedestrian accident this year, State College Police Sgt. Dana Leonard said he thinks in the past there have been a "remarkably" low number of these types of accidents in State College.
At least two other incidents were reported in January when Penn State students were treated for injuries after being hit by vehicles while crossing the street. Both of these incidents, however, occurred at night and the victims appeared to be intoxicated, police said.
Anyone who witnessed the accident yesterday is urged to contact State College police at 234-7150.
