With a Super Bowl win on Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers brought glory to their hometown and amplified demand for anything black and yellow in State College.
Kenny Macklin, manager of Hat World at the Nittany Mall, said he received his shipment of Super Bowl Champion hats on Tuesday and has had trouble keeping them on the shelves. He added that customers often purchase three or four at a time.
"We sold out of AFC Champion hats the Friday before the big game," Macklin said. "We've even sold the few [Seattle] Seahawks hats we had and that was before they even reached the Super Bowl."
There has been a steady flow of new Steelers merchandise to stores since their playoff birth in January.
After each victory -- the wildcard game win against the Cincinnati Bengals, the AFC division win against the Indianapolis Colts and the AFC Conference Championship win against the Denver Broncos -- a new sea of paraphernalia flooded sporting goods and clothing stores alike.
Glenn Barker, sales manager of Rapid Transit Sportswear, 115 S. Allen St., said he has had increased sales throughout his Steelers merchandise line.
"We got Super Bowl Champion hats and shirts Wednesday and have been selling them very well," he said.
As for the famed Terrible Towel, Barker said they are not available, but the official Super Bowl Terrible Towels are coming soon.
Elise Hasbrook, corporate communications manager for Finish Line, said Steelers merchandise like the official locker room gear is selling well.
In addition, she said Finish Line, located locally in the Nittany Mall, plans to introduce new products as early as Friday.
The new items include T-shirts featuring the Championship Parade and Super Bowl ring, as well as authentic replica jerseys with the official Super Bowl XL patch worn during the game.
Other stores aren't devoting as much shelf space to Steelers commodities and are instead focusing on a few big sellers.
"Sales weren't so hot with a lot of the pre-Super Bowl merchandise, so when the time came to order Super Bowl Champion stuff, I only ordered shirts and locker room tees," said Kelly Bowman, the clothing buyer at Student Book Store, 330 E. College Ave.
The abundant supply of merchandise has been met with an equally high demand from students.
"I've been looking around a lot, namely for a Jerome Bettis jersey," Erica Barth (junior-business management) said. "I also really want a yellow short-sleeve T-shirt that says 'Super Bowl Champs' on it."
And those looking for unique memorabilia have been turning to a few different downtown stores.
People's Nation, 126 E. College Ave., specializes in custom T-shirts and has seen a sales trend since the Steelers made the playoffs, employee Megan Weidenhof said.
"The weeks leading up to the [Super Bowl], we had a lot of people making shirts," Weidenhof said.
She added since the Super Bowl has passed, interest in Steelers shirts has declined -- which is clearly yevident in the removal of the black and yellow shirts from the store's window mannequins.
"But we do have a waiting list for the 'One For The Thumb' shirt, which is actually on backorder," Weidenhof said.
Another store providing unique Steelers-branded creations is 2000 Degrees, 202 W. College Ave., which allows customers to paint, draw and style anything from plates and vases to shot glasses.
"Since they made the playoffs, people have been coming in and making mugs and plates with the Steelers logo on them," employee Megan Kohlmiller said.
