Housing guarantees rooms for first-year students only
This is in response to Liz Benullo's letter, "Housing contract shortage disappointing for students," Feb. 6. I understand it is disappointing for students to not receive a housing contract, but I think her argument is flawed. It is clearly stated to potential students that they are only guaranteed on-campus housing for one year. After this time, they are responsible for finding their own housing, either on campus through the lottery system or off campus. Also, Benullo has not researched living in an apartment thoroughly or she would have found out that some apartment buildings do offer semester leases (for students traveling abroad or for the summer sessions). She also did not consider that there are sublet signs everywhere on campus. The people who advertise for sublets are in situations similar to students without contracts, and they would love for someone to take over their lease for a semester. Benullo, you said Penn State is greedy with accepting more applicants, but do you honestly think Penn State can house the thousands of people who currently attend college here? If you do, I think you have ridiculously high expectations. I think Penn State is doing a wonderful job of providing housing at all for upperclassmen. Just make sure you are aware of all the options.
