Handouts, big government not part of Republican way
Since my enrollment at Penn State, I have noticed an overwhelming bias against Republicans. It is important that one knows what a Republican is before assumptions are made about the party. Republicans, in a nutshell, want a small central government, only overseeing when the nation at large demands so. Because the party seeks to have a small government, the money that would pay for the government is returned to the taxpayer by lowering taxes. As a whole, the Republican Party tries not to give a lot of "handouts" like Social Security and welfare because these programs often require a larger government to run, and traditionally our elected officials (both Republicans and Democrats) mishandle the money. I am sixth-generation Irish, and when my ancestors came here they were faced with a potato famine at home. Uncle Sam offered them land in exchange for hard work. There were no handouts then, nor did people expect them. Times have changed now, and that is why the Democratic Party is so big here. They promise everyone a handout, but who does that hurt in the long run? The taxpayers. Robert McCaulley
