IFC stripper ban advances respect, rights for women

This is in response to Alpha Chi Omega sorority member Lindsay Foster's comment, "Although strippers are kind of vulgar, they're still tradition," in the article, "Fraternities OK with dancer ban," Feb. 1.

Yes, strippers may be a tradition for fraternities, but that may also explain why women are traditionally viewed and treated as solely "sex objects." Unfortunately, Foster's comment was the only female response to the ban published in the article, which puts her in a position to speak for all women. I assure you there are many women who disagree with her statement.

I am also disappointed that the female writer, Lisa Weismann, made the choice to publish this statement without including the views of other women. These two women showed less respect for women than the fraternities themselves. My advice for Foster and Weismann is to consider the message they are sending to everyone. The IFC is making a change to help women gain the respect we expect, yet you are arguing against it and condoning these demeaning acts. Here's to "stripping" the old tradition and to the start of a new one.
