Letter to the Editor
University climate perfect for many different ideologies

After reading "UCLA alum offers money for proof of bias," Feb. 1, it was apparent that too often students are quick to accuse others of bias. This is another result of the partisan political scene in America today.

In recent years, Republicans and Democrats alike have operated under the mentality that, "If you don't think the way I do, you're wrong." Naturally, their supporters have adopted this mindset and carried it on in their daily lives. When Shauna Moser, chairman of Young Americans for Freedom, said, "If someone had paid me $100 each time I encountered bias in class, I would be paying off my student loans by now," it is evident that she is close-minded toward those with a different ideology than her. In her case, she has encountered some professors who do not share her conservative views.

For me, interacting with those with different or opposing beliefs has led to engaging and thought-provoking discussion that causes both people involved to either question or solidify their beliefs. It should be a university's goal to have a faculty diverse in ideology, and for that Penn State should be commended.
