A 21-year-old Penn State student, who allegedly choked his girlfriend, also a Penn State student, was charged with simple assault late Saturday night.

Matthew Pross was allegedly intoxicated when he choked his girlfriend after arguing with her, the State College Police Department said. The assault occurred on the 200 block of Atherton Street, where Pross lives. The victim fled and called the police.

Police said they were unsure whether the victim was admitted to Mount Nittany Medical Center for injuries.

Police investigating on campus fight

Police are investigating an early Saturday morning altercation at the Greenberg Ice Pavillion that involved a group of people, one who was in possession of a handgun.

At about 3:40 a.m. Saturday, Penn State University Police, with the assistance of the State College Police Department, arrived at the scene on campus and recovered the handgun. State College police would not release any further information regarding the nature of the fight or how many people were involved. University police would only say there is an ongoing investigation.
