Letter to the Editor
IFC should allow strippers to entertain its chapters

If a fraternity chapter feels that it wants to hire exotic dancers for any reason then it should be allowed to do so ("Fraternities OK with dancer ban," Feb. 1).

In relation to recruitment, if Sigma Lambda Beta President Richy Echegaray truly believes that a prospective candidate joins an organization based solely on seeing a naked woman then he is the one who needs to mature. I bet he just snickered after reading the word "naked."

Honestly, an event with dancers is a great time. It is a lot of fun for a variety of people to enjoy; guys and girls regardless of age and sexuality. While I was an undergraduate, I did go to exotic dancer functions at my own house, fraternity houses and apartments and the dancers did not do anything they did not want to do. Many of the dancers out there are strong, beautiful and even educated women. Whether they choose to dance for financial reasons or simply because they are good at it, it is a legitimate profession. So, what is so wrong with a fraternity chapter being an audience for these women?

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is absolutely overstepping its boundaries, and quite frankly, it is wasting its resources. Instead of monitoring chapters to see if naked women are around, IFC should be putting more effort into stopping sexual assault, decreasing the frequency of parties resulting in people passing out in alleys and the misuse of Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon funds for perhaps parties and/or drugs. The next time the IFC Executive Board is out on a bar tour, it should ask itself if there is a huge difference between drooling over the two girls grinding on each other at the Shandygaff and hiring a couple women to dance in the confines of a house.
